Pam Muñoz Ryan -- set the story in the American West (Wyoming) and named the horses for painters of the American West.  Her hope was that if readers searched for their work they might appreciate the landscape, history, and color of a part of the unique area.  Other artists whose names that she used are those of artists that personally impressed her as artists who overcame  the reservations and objections of others who did not think they would be successful as artists (including Mary Cassatt and Artemisia Gentileschi).  And others such as N.C. Wyeth just because she liked his work
